Bicycle Unit
The Bike Unit is viewed as an aid too furthering positive community relations and as a sensible approach to patrolling unique areas of Town. The Bike Unit is readily deployed on the Minuteman Trail, Town Day, and other areas of town not readily available to officers by car or foot. The utilization of the police mountain bike offers the town another way to quickly and efficiently patrol the town and increase visibility and approachability of the officers to the community they serve. The Bicycle Unit was reequipped and redeployed under the community-policing model in 2000 while under the direction of Chief Frederick Ryan.

All officers assigned to the Unit must attend and successfully complete a Mountain Bike School certified by the Massachusetts Police Training Council known as COBWEB (Cops On Bikes With Education For Bicyclists). The course is a 24-hour three-day program with classroom and field instruction. The officer upon completion of the course will have developed a heightened awareness of the importance of fitness, nutrition, injury prevention and physical well-being.

The Department currently has five Trek Mountain Bikes available for patrol and special events.
