The K-9 Unit assists police personnel to search for missing persons, hidden suspects or articles, evidence of a crime, and to detect the presence of narcotics. The K-9 Unit assists in the arrest and apprehension of felons and protects officers and the public from serious injury when donig so. The K-9 Unit was created by Chief Frederick Ryan in 2006.
Officer Michael Hogan, a seven-year veteran of the Department is the K-9 handler with partner K-9 Dasty, a German Shepard from the Czech Republic. Dasty was chosen due to his breed which is known for intense drive and endurance. This combination makes K-9 Dasty an outstanding choice for police work.
Officer Hogan and K-9 Dasty completed a rigorous 14-week basic training at the Boston Police K-9 Academy. Upon completion, the team is now certified in patrol work. Officer Hogan and K-9 Dasty also completed a 5-week Narcotic School, certifying them to detect for nine different types of narcotics. After only one year of service to the Police Department, the Unit is responsible for dozens of apprehensions and cash seizures valued at over $10,000. They are also responsible for seizing numerous amounts of illegal drugs off the streets, making our community safer.
Officer Hogan and K-9 Dasty have received numerous department awards and recently placed first in the USPCA Narcotic Competition, Region 9. They have also been recognized by area departments for there assistance in the apprehension of felons and detection of narcotics. The pair has also received a citation from the Massachusetts House of Representatives for Outstanding Service to the Community of Arlington.
Officer Hogan and K-9 Dasty also provide demonstrations to Arlington Schools and youth groups. They have appeared before St. Agnes, Arlington Boys and Girls Club, Arlington Special-Education Pre-School, and the Middlesex County Sheriff summer camp to name a few.
