Creating Affordable Housing:  Ask the Experts

Many groups and people in Arlington feel strongly that the Town needs to act proactively to create more affordable housing in our community, and would like to better understand how to make that happen. This forum will feature four development teams that have recently created affordable housing here or in other communities. Each of the featured projects is at least 50% affordable, and most incorporate a mix of income levels. They all required significant Federal, State and/or local subsidy to be financially feasible. And each of the developers is a mission-driven organization that is in the business of creating, preserving, owning and operating affordable housing in Massachusetts communities.

First each team will present a case study about a project, describing the project’s conception, site acquisition, design, permitting, development costs, financing, affordability levels and occupancy. We’ll hear about major challenges and compromises, and who and what it took to make them happen.   

We’ll then have a moderated discussion about common themes and challenges and discuss ways to incorporate climate resiliency and accessibility and prioritize diversity and racial equity in affordable housing. We’ll also ask them all what it would take for them to develop affordable housing in Arlington. Finally, we’ll reserve lots of time at the end for the affordable housing developers to field audience questions.
