The Health Department offers quarterly sharps collection opportunities for Arlington residents. Collection events will take place at 33 Ryder St, Arlington, MA.

All new, used, and unopened sharps (needles, syringes, lancets, epi-pens, etc.) must be brought to the collection site in FDA approved sharps containers. Loose sharps, sharps in original packaging, or sharps in unapproved containers will not be accepted. FDA approved sharps containers are available for purchase at your local pharmacy or through the Arlington Health Department at drop-off on the above dates, at a cost of $5 for small containers, $10 for medium containers or $20 for large containers.

If you are a resident who uses needles or sharps to manage a medical condition at home, proper disposal of these items is paramount to personal and public safety. Employing safe sharps use and disposal practices will prevent used needles and other sharps from injuring people or pets, and prohibit the spread of life-threatening diseases. Never put used needles and sharps in household trash, public trash, or in with the recyclables, and do not flush them down the toilet.

The improper disposal of sharps in a household or public trash can is a violation of State law (105 CMR 480.000) and is punishable by a fine. Store sharps in an approved sharps container after use, and do not place them into other plastic containers such as empty milk cartons or laundry detergent bottles.

Only approved sharps containers will be accepted at the time of disposal. These containers can be purchased online, through local retailers, through the mail, and through the Health Department during Sharps Collection times.

Bring your old medical inhalers to 33 Ryder St for free disposal during a regularly scheduled sharps disposal event. Please only bring the inhaler insert.
