The “Registration and Maintenance of Vacant Commercial and Industrial Buildings Bylaw” was approved by a vote of Special Town Meeting on October 19, 2016 and later approved by the Attorney General’s Office. The bylaw was last updated at the April 24, 2024 Town Meeting which refocused the bylaws' scope to vacant commercial and industrial properties with frontage along one or more of the following streets, Massachusetts Avenue, Broadway, Lake Street, Medford Street, Mill Street, or Park Avenue. This bylaw is the product of a collaborative effort between community stakeholders, including Arlington’s business community, and the Town to address the potential for blight and safety hazards which can accompany commercial property vacancies. View the Bylaw.

If you are a property owner and your commercial storefront is vacant or abandoned, you are required to register by completing an application to the Inspectional Services Department pursuant to Title V Article 17 of the Town Bylaws. In addition, you need to maintain and secure your property, even if partially unoccupied, to prevent blight and public safety hazards in compliance with all other applicable building, health, fire, and safety codes. If your building is not currently vacant or abandoned, no action is required of you at this time. If you wish to seek a waiver based on financial hardship or if you have any questions please contact Katie Luczai, Economic Development Coordinator, at 781-316-3095 or kluczai@town.arlington.ma.us.
