Powers and Duties
Select Board
- There are 5 elected members to the Select Board, each elected to 3-year terms.
- Duties can be read in Section 4, 5 of the Town Managers Act.
- Time Commitment: 22 meetings a year, with additional subcommittee work.
- Compensation: $3,500 Chair, $3,000 member.

- There are 7 elected members to the School Committee, each elected to 3-year terms.

- Time Commitment: 20 meetings a year, with additional subcommittee work.
- Compensation: $3,000 member.
Board of Assessors
- There are 3 elected members to the Board of Assessors. Each elected to 3-year terms.

- Time Commitment: 22 meetings a year
- Compensation: $4,900 member
Arlington Housing Authority
- There are 3 elected members of the Arlington Housing Authority Board of Directors and 2 appointed members. One member is appointed by the Governor and the other must a tenant living in one of the Housing Authority properties and is appointed by the Select Board.
- The duties are described in the Training Manual for Board Members
- Time Commitment: monthly meetings and additional hearings as needed
- Compensation: Members are paid based on a formula from Executive Office of Housing and Livable Communities
Town Clerk
- The Town Clerk is elected for a 3-year term.
- Duties of the Town Clerk may be read in the Town Bylaws, Title 1, Article 3.
- Time Commitment: Full-Time Job
- Compensation - $96,555 (also receives $1,500 stipend as Registrar of Voters)
Moderator
- The Moderator is elected for a 3-year term.
- Duties of the Moderator may be read in the Town Bylaws, Title 1, Article 1, Section 3.
- Time Commitment: unspecified, but the Moderator works to prepare in advance of Town Meeting sessions, answers procedural questions throughout the year, and chairs each night Town Meeting is in session.
- Compensation: $500 stipend
Town Meeting Members
- Arlington has 252 Town Meeting Members, twelve from each precinct, with one-third elected each year. There are often additional openings for “unexpired terms” of one or two years in some of the precincts.
- Information for prospective and new Town Meeting members.
- Time Commitment: Town Meeting is held in the Spring and meets until all articles are heard. Length ranges from 5-8 nights at 3 hours per night. Town Meeting members will also be called to serve at any Special Town Meeting called during the year.
- There is no compensation.
