Hazard Mitigation Plan Public Meeting

The Town of Arlington Department of Planning and Community Development (DPCD) invites the community to attend a public meeting on the update of its Hazard Mitigation Plan. During the meeting, staff from the Metropolitan Area Planning Council (MAPC) and DPCD will present the importance of hazard mitigation planning and the hazards that can affect Arlington. Following the presentation, there will be an opportunity for feedback and discussion with MAPC and DPCD staff. The meeting will be held on Thursday, June 13, 2019, at 7:00 p.m. in the Senior Center Main Room, 27 Maple Street, Arlington.

The Town of Arlington received $17,500 from the Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency (MEMA) in 2018 to complete an update of the Town’s Hazard Mitigation Plan, which was adopted in 2012. Hazard Mitigation Plans provide policy makers with more information to ensure that residents are protected from hazards. The planning process will incorporate the findings and actionable priorities identified during the Municipal Vulnerability Preparedness Community Resilience Building Workshop, conducted in January and February 2018. The updated Hazard Mitigation Plan will document natural hazards that affect the Town, such as floods, hurricanes, and winter storms, as well as actions that the Town can take to reduce its vulnerability to these hazards.

The Hazard Mitigation Plan will be submitted to MEMA and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) in early 2020. Once completed and approved by the two agencies, the Town will be eligible for federal Hazard Mitigation Grants from FEMA. These grants can be applied for and utilized by the Town to take actions to reduce or eliminate long-term risk to people and property from future disasters.
