Transgender Day of Resilience

Event flyer for transgender day of resiliencePLEASE JOIN US on MONDAY, November 20 at 7 p.m. for a commemoration of Transgender Day of Resilience. We will gather on the meetinghouse lawn at First Parish Unitarian Universalist Congregation, 630 Mass Ave., Arlington Center.

Transgender, non-binary, and gender expansive people are also invited to an affinity event at 6:15 p.m. at First Parish Congregation to meet and socialize before the 7 p.m. event takes place. Pizza and other refreshments will be offered, and supplies will be available to create art and write poetry.
Transgender Day of Resilience is a reimagining of Transgender Day of Remembrance, which is held annually on November 20 to honor the lives of trans and gender expansive people whose lives have been lost to bias-motivated violence. Transgender Day of Resilience was founded in 2015 by the New Orleans-based trans justice organization BreakOUT!, which called on the larger LGBTQIA+ community to include stories of resilience in annual Transgender Day of Remembrance events. BreaktOUT! also explicitly called on the community to elevate the stories of BIPOC trans, non-binary, and gender expansive people as they experience much higher rates of violence than their white counterparts.
The Rainbow Commission will be collecting items for Youth on Fire, a confidential drop-in space for young people age 14-24 who are unhoused or experiencing unstable housing. Youth on Fire serves all young people, but a disproportionate number are trans, non-binary, or gender expansive. Personal hygiene products such as toothpaste, deodorant, and combs; gender-affirming apparel such as chest binders and gaffs; and warm-weather gear such as hats and gloves are needed.
